Right. I've taken a list of packages from [1], and compared that to the list of packages in Debian testing[2]. Note that there is a good chance that the Debian testing list is a little out of date compared to what is actually available in the testing tree. The same may be true of the Gentoo list, but I can't comment on that. For each package/version pair listed at [1], I've checked the package/version pair listed at [2] and generated a list of packages and the version that Gentoo and Debian testing are offering. Attached[3] is a comma-separated value list, containing a list of Packages, and the versions that are reported to be available according to [1] and [2]. In most cases where the two distributions are not equal, Debian testing is coming out ahead. There are a few cases where it appears Gentoo has an advantage (e.g. raidtools), but this is because Debian offers raidtools 0.4x and 0.9x separately. [1] http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/pkgs/sys-apps/index.xml [2] http://packages.debian.org/testing/allpackages.html [3] I don't generally like attaching files to emails that are destined for a mailing list, but in this case the file is smaller than most of the top-posting full-quoting emails that I receive from this list.
