E17 is still under heavy development and considered fairly unstable. If
you're willing to risk it, or planning to work on it, then you can check
the code directly out of CVS and build it on your Debian (or whatever
other) distribution without too much hassle.

Yes, choice and competition is good. I don't think anybody on the list
has suggested that all Linux users should run the same distribution.
