1 - csawtell is quite correct, Kate is specifically designed for
working with text files and shouldn't muck them up - and is
definatly not the culprit here
2 - Matthew Gregan correctly spotted the cause - dumb user error
...but, quite unrelated to this, I intend to force myself to re-learn
and use vi/vim - at least to the extent of confidently cutting and
pasting!
nano and pico are easy, but I think can cause probs too if you leave off
the -w; besides, the horrible learning curve of vi - or emacs if you
follow that path - is one of the great *nix traditions :-)
