Both kword and scribus do this easily, and both are out of the box,
i.e. no need to compile (well for me anyway). You might want to also
install a large number of fonts, which you'll have to source from
something other than a typical linux distribution (i.e. spend money).
Various billyware can be a good source, or try www.fontsite.com's
fontsite500 CD (US$50). Fontsite is probably not regarded as top class,
but for birthday cards that's a non-issue and it's cheap for a large
selection. Font installation is kind of trivial (unpack into directory,
run SuSEconfig - or use the KDE font installer).
