I had another look, and yes, kinternet has 4 programmer names, all
@suse.de. Its command line counterpart, cinternet, is listed as
"frontend to smpppd". That's "The SuSE Meta PPP Daemon is the back-end
for kinternet. It is required for modem, ISDN, and DSL connection."
It's all GPL, use it if you feel like it, it'll solve your problem. It
worked out of the box for +1y, doesn't require root, and any newby can
set it up.

And RedHat is the distro the university wants to give to all the newby
users - needing to run their dialup desktops stuff as root. Shudder. At
the risk of annoying a few people, I will keep on recommending SuSE for
beginners ;)
