Not only now, for some while already. grub can only boot from
filesystems which it understands, and I still have several boxes where
I changed back to lilo because grub wouldn't do a thing, boxes with
raid mostly. An ls /boot/grub should settle the argument about what
filesystems grub knows about:

e2fs_stage1_5
fat_stage1_5
ffs_stage1_5
jfs_stage1_5
minix_stage1_5
nbgrub
pxegrub
reiserfs_stage1_5
stage1
stage2
stage2.netboot
vstafs_stage1_5
xfs_stage1_5

Pretty much all of what is of interest these days, and includes all the
journalling fs.
