I hear this line quite often in response to these queries, and I don't disagree with it, but I thought it would be useful to mention that I use 2 internal modems quite successfully with linux (HD install of Knoppix)- one is a HCF winmodem the other is a an Actiontec (I think that is right) PCI hardware modem, both are easy to set up (Knoppix sets the hardware modem just by running Khudzu) - and brwsing and downloading is excellent with both (I reckon that the winmodem works better in linux than XP actually).
