(Trying not to be smug)....

I went home last night and typed

Emerge search kmplayer
Emerge -p kmplayer
Emerge kmplayer

And then went to have dinner.
After dinner I watched Gladiator.

Subject: DVD player installation problems :-(

Seeing the recent DVD player thread, I thought I would try to
get my DVD drive playing DVD's in Linux last night.

What a mess.

I have RH 9.0 - i.e. reasonably up to date.

I tried a number of different mplayer rpms from various places, all
needed some other packages, which needed some other packages etc.
If I have a 56K modem and an hour before bedtime, I don't want
to be farting around downloading various packages in the hope they'll
sort it out. I want a few RPMs which, together, will let me play DVDs on
RH 9. Is that so hard? Perhaps I didn't have the correct google
incantations - but I couldn't see a simple "install this rpm for RH9 and
you can play DVDs" anywhere. Source or binary I don't care - I just want
something that works without lots of hassle.

I was trying mplayer. xine looked like it had similar issues. Didn't
look at ogle.

Perhaps someone on the list has found the magic combination of packages
to install on RH9 that will work.

Please let me--- let us all--- know.

No smug gentoo comments either.

Cheers,
Carl.
