Sorry - I should have suggested urpmi.

My point is that these two have less memory usage than dselect and
friends.

Did you manage to get a console with either top or free running?  or
even cat /proc/meminfo ?

Adding a swap file might be a short term solution, then you can delete
it later (if you want) with no need to repartition.
