They way this can be done with ext2 is to defrag the partition.  defrag is
slow and the last time I used it it fscked a ext3 partition, it may be
better behaved now.  Note the amount of free space on the partition, using
cfdisk (fdisk may be more accurate) delete the partition and create a
smaller partition making certain that it starts at exactly the same place
as the old one.  Run fsck and you should be in business.  Of course you
will have made backups.
