Scanners are proprietary devices. That means little info about their workings will ever make it to Open Source authors wishing to create drivers to run them. Consequently the quality of scan seen with open source drivers like sane leaves a bit to be desired when the quality achieved under Windows or MacOS is seen. Also, sometimes just getting the scanner to work is a bit of a mission...
plenty of open-source alternatives. Nvidia can keep their binary-only rubbish as far as I am concerned.
Just think how crap the linux 3D graphics market would be without nVidias proprietary driver for TNT/GeForce graphics cards...its intellectual property they are trying to protect and with good reason. Its not like we have to pay for the drivers for the nforce2...
