it depends on your time to live (ttl). 

when a dns server looks up a name it looks from the ass end backwards.
ie for www.clug.geek.nz it forst looks for an authoritative server for
.nz, then for .geek.nz then for .clug.geek.nz then for www.clug.geek.nz

Along the way it might have www.clug.geek.nz cached, but its only
allowed to be cached for the ttl period.

Stable dns systems can have long ttl's. dyndns uses (IIRC) 60 seconds.
ie if your dyndns record changes, it will be wrong in many caches round
the internet for up to 60 seconds.

all dns queries take time, and a lot more time if its not in the cache. 

therefore change propogation depends on TTL rather than anything else. A
non-cached query time depends on how many levels you have to go through
to get to the authoritative server for your query.
