There are open source CPUs. I know of two, the Freedom processor and the OpenRISC 1000. The freedom processor is not going to be useful for quite some time. The OpenRISC has actually run in hardware (FPGA). It is quite a nice processor and Linux is currently being ported to it. Have a search for Open Source Hardware Later Lee
