Redhat Kernel modules

I have managed to get a usb device to work on my test machine, by 
modifying the vendor and
device id's embedded in the kernel driver source code and recompiling 
the kernel.

I don't want to mess with my main machine too much and thought I could 
just do a
"make modules" and a "make modules_install" but it adds "custom" on the 
kernel version
for the module.

Is there a way around this?
