Hi there, > well bugger me, but i seem to recall it working at the workshop > evening some months ago.
Yep, but under Mandrake 9.0 with kernel 2.4.19...now I'm running Mandrake 9.1 with kernel 2.4.21-mdk.xx.xx. It is the Epson iscan program I need to get working, xsane 'works' enough to scan using the scanner but the quality is terrible... > hard to believe a scanner is less compatible with a LATER kernel. > > perhaps you just need so suss out a fix. If you go to Epson-Kowa website, and read the scanners forum you will see I am certainly not alone with this issue of iscan failing to run on later distros/kernels... > is it a simple matter of the card not being in the kernel's database? I > seem to recall wee loaded the module with explicit vendor and product > id's Yep. A simple 'insmod' in rc.local fixed that, but now with a newer version of Mandrake and of iscan it doesn't wanna go... The current rpm comes in 2 flavours...1 made with gcc 2.9.x, and a bug-fixed version made with gcc 3.2.x to try and fix the segfaulting... neither version appears to make any difference to me. Both segfault shortly after trying to do anything after the initial window pops up. I grabbed the source, and after fixing the ./configure I could not complete the make without aborting due to multitudes of errors... Its been 4 months, and Epson have yet to release any bug-fixes or anything at all related to fixing this problem with iscan. Xsane is simply not an option due to poor quality/slow speed, and I have a large number of photographs to deal with. I take photography very seriously so I need the best quality from the scanner... Kind regards, Chris Wilkinson, Christchurch.
