I looked into this, as i want to do a similar thing (although not
urgently, its just been on my mind for a while).

found this post on google groups, which seems to indicate you can end up
with 2.96 and 3.2 on one box (Iknow debian manages this by creating
/usr/bin/gcc as a link you can either point at /usr/bin/gcc295 or
/usr/bon/gcc32x as you please.
