There is a very good tutorial (IMHO) for Xfree at

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That
way, when you criticize them, you're a mile way and you have their shoes.

Anyone worked with specific modelines in XFree86?

I have this problem
After Deadbat 9.0 install X does not start - well X does start but the
monitor complains that the frequency is incorrect.
The install correctly detected both the S3 Savage onboard graphics and
the Philips s107 Monitor. The settings for both in the X config file
are correct [as far as i can tell]
By removing the Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" line I can select
resolutions that will display [Ctrl-Alt-+] but it loads _many_ different
resolutions/modelines.

I tried copying the Modelines from the XFree86.0.log file and
configuring X to use them, but it all came unstuck..

Is there anyone that knows how to specify the modelines to use [and to
stop X using the default ones]

BTW a Modes "640x480" line works, but adding other resolutions seems to
cause frequency problems..

Also BTW Knoppix 3.2 has the same problem.

Any thoughts

Cheers
John
