I have had a similar problem with a S3 videocard (4mb ram).

I upgraded from Mandrake 9.0 to Mandrake 9.1. As a consequence I upgraded to a
newer version of KDE.

X would start but KDE would fart around trying to draw screens and then hang.
Ice wm would run.

I resolved the problem by swapping the video card with a Nvidia card with 32Mb
of ram. Maybe your problem is similar, and can only be resolved by a card
upgrade.

PS. I had problems getting the S3 card work with Winders 2000 pro. Resolved
the problem using NT4 drivers.
