Hi Mike I'm pretty new to the game myself, and have found either Redhat (9 is latest ver) or Mandrake (9.something!!) pretty easy to use, though others on this list may have other ideas.
First, I'd recommend trying Knoppix to make sure your hardware is happy. Knoppix is a linux distro which runs entirely off one CD. Put it in, reboot with your CD drive as startup drive, and hey, linux... Then you can download some linux distros from ftp.tranzpeer.net which is a NZ site (useful if you're on jetstream and want to make the most of your national traffic). If you're on dialup, then you might get bored waiting for 3 CD's full at 650-700Mb to download. I've visited Paul at the e-Cafe in the arts centre several times for linux CDs. You can take in your own media and he will write it cheap, or he can supply for more... Best of luck Steve
