gentoo GRP will get you up and running very fast. however, like most distros it is out of date already, do an emerge rsync && emerge -up world and you'll get a sizeable list (don't worry you will for other distro's updates too.)
then again you don't NEED to update just because a new ebuild is out.[1] debian does have lovely updating, but in stable the packages are somewhat older. I have never had much luck with unstable/testing, but your mileage will vary. On my laptop i first installed debian via knoppix, but i soon tired of it and went for gentoo. its much happier now. in particular the knoppix bombed on updating because of its peculiar mixture of stable/unstable/testing and third party (ie non official debian) apt sources. then again i'm a gentoo bigot ;-) [1] of course you will want security updates, and in gentoo they are not as easy to identify and sort form general updates as in debian.
