I had a lot of problems getting PCMCIA to play ball... but the machinery was quite old. Since 2.5.something a lot has been modularised, so you need to make sure you include support for PS/2 keyboards, and for console on virtual terminal, and even the PC Speaker. devfs also threw up on 2.6, but I had an oldish version (debian testing)
