This advice would have to be "Do not install Mandrake 9.2 on any
computer which has an LG based CD-ROM drive".

Now is a good time to check your warranty, and if it's not yet expired,
to upgrade to a new cdrom drive at LG's expense. If it has expired ->
bad luck, you get to keep the rubbish.

It seems to become more frequent that optical drives self-destruct.
Late last year there was an urgent call from some laptop maker (Dell?)
to upgrade firmware on Pioneer dvdrom/cdrw units in those laptops,
because "there is a 1-in-3 chance whenever a 24x cd-rw is inserted that
the drive will self-destruct". 3 months ago I didn't know any of this,
and thought (with good reason) that the easiest way to test whether my
Sony CRX195 cd burner can handle 24x rw is to try and burn one. It
doesn't, my luck that it was within warranty. If inserting a CD to burn
into a CD burner destroys the burner, well what do you say, sorry Sony,
your problem. Dito LG.

I bet what happened is that the firmware programmers goofed badly, and
the testing was only done with some M$ software.

Watch out for the future fine print in warranty statements - "void if
not used with approved media or burner software".

Btw I tried that packet-writing patch some months ago, and the bottom
line of it is: nice idea, works in theory, but practically useless.
