Now this rings a bell.  There is a patch on my iPAQ that compensates for a "sleep" timer deficiency on my card - wonder if this was what Chris was referring to.  Before I used the patch, call setup took ages on my iPA.

I wonder if there is a response delay by the card when initialising...  will have a play again
 
No luck so far :-(
