I have had cursor problems in the past which I resolved by editing my XFree86 
configuration file. Your problems are not the same as mine so this solution 
may not work. However it is easy enough to implement so worth a try. 

Add the line
        Option "sw_cursor"
to the device section of your XFree86 configuration file.
