When you do that you are "hijacking the thread" as your message will still retains header info that many email clients see and then still put you in the same thread tree as the message you replied to.
The reason I'm especially irritated is that Nathan Cook is the second person on this thread to hijack. The first was Steve Holdoway.
Yes, the multi-topic threads are somewhat tricky to the uninitiated (like me!). We can save that kind of behaviour for usenet groups, where people seem to compete to be the 'threadjacker' of the day...
