The latest edition of the IEEE Software has a large number of papers in it dealing with open source. Several look like they're very interesting reading. I glanced over the one below - note the affiliations, and read Spinellis's bio before gun-jumping.
Spinellis is a multiple winner of the ofuscated C competition.
He won one year by writing a BASIC interpreter in 1536 (512*3) bytes of C source code.
He won the next year by writing (I kid you not) a BASIC *compiler* in 1536 bytes of C code.
The guy's got brains.
