It seems to me that using Linux and being on this mailing list is a constant source of
"enlightenment".

Recent posts also reminded me that others obviously do not realise the power of some
of the programmes available for Linux. I wondered if it would be interesting to start
a thread where users could list their common programmes and comments.

You can ignore or scoff at the idea if you like but I will be bold enough to start the
ball rolling. If it prompts others to ask more and expand their knowledge and use of
Linux then good. I know most of what I use is because someone else suggested it.

I use:

Distro = Gentoo with kernel 2.6.3
Desktop = KDE 3.2
LTSP to serve 2 diskless clients
OpenOffice.org for all of my "Office" requirements
Kontact (KDE personal information manager - mail, addresses, tasks, organiser etc)
Kopete Instant messenger (several plugins - I use MSN and ICQ)
k3b for CD burning
Mozilla web browser
Mozilla Composer - composing my web pages
Sitecopy to synchronise my web-site
gFTP for FTP files
Album - for phot galleries
Ksambaplugin - GUI smb setup tool
The Gimp - Photoshop almost equivalent
ImageMagick
Various Multimedia programmes but mainly XMMS, Xine and Mplayer
giFT for FastTrack (Kazaa)
GnuCash - Personal Finance Manager
NTP for time synchronisation
...and many more
