Hi Anton,

Hi,
My partner and I are going overseas and want to get a digital camera. We would be looking to spend in the $400 to $600 bracket,

You'll get a great camera in that price range.

and that would
probably need to include a reasonable memory chip/card (or whatever it is, either packaged with or bought separately).

It will need to be bought separately as the included cards (if there is one) are very small density 'starter' cards only. Useless for anything practical. Buy one that takes Compact Flash for best 'Bang-for-buck' Memory and one that takes SD/MMC for small size consideration. Incidentally, SD has just surpassed CF as the #1 memory format for digital cameras in the world.

I will, of course, be
wanting it to be fully interoperable with a linux system, as I hear they have computers where we are going ;-).

With a card reader, it won't matter but GTKam has built in drivers for most modern cams anyway.

I don't know much about digital cameras but would prefer it to be able to work as a webcam and possibly take video as well.

Video probably won't be a big ask, webcam will take some doing.

Is this unrealistic
for the price? Are there issues with linux drivers?
Any advice on wheres, whys and hows are much appreciated.
