> MOST cameras require GPhoto

ok, didn't know - was assuming they'd go towards mass storage device
Irrespective of what most cameras do, gphoto is a PITA.
Do *all* cameras write files onto the flash mem such that the files can
be read by the usual card readers?

Done, for the camera I may be interested in you only list 1 item, and
it's the wrong one (and your search doesn't work). I was quoted $150
from what would possible be one of the cheapest photo shops in NZ
(photo.co.nz), and I doubt you can supply the battery for 30-40 (which
is what I'd be prepared to pay, based on Ah-capacity).

All a question of quality.

Looking at consumer test results, most of the big-brand models I'd rate
as you describe. Few score above 7 (out of 10) for image quality. You
use a camera to get images, right? One would think the quality of those
to be somewhat important.

> You've been out of the loop for a while haven't you?

Maybe. Or I have more professional requirements and been talking to a
pro photographer who's just tried to buy something useful and failed :)
(And, no offense intended, I would tend to listen more to photographers
than to digicam tradespeople :) )

If someone finds a digicam that does what they want - fine. I'm still
looking...
