However I am curious to know other list members (that have Telstra cable) find the cable modem under linux... what kind of setup is needed (DHCP?) any pitfalls etc.

It's a piece of cake. The service man when installing for me a couple of months ago asked me what version of Windows I was running, and got puzzled when I said Linux.
I took the connection ip addresses (fixed ip with gateway) from him and it worked perfectly. He was very surprised.
Apparently he has to fiddle most times with Windows to ensure things, such as preventing dial-up networking from overtaking the connection that can be required.
