Windows XP is very possessive about its boot loader, and when SP2 comes out, it MAY cause problems. I suggest that you rethink this Lilo or Grub method and just use the BIOS to select the boot device; most modern motherboards have a menu that can be set to pop up for a few seconds. Using the BIOS means that each drive thinks it is hda when it is selected and running; and windows will never have a problem. You don't need to mess around with boot loaders' .ini files and it is so much more reliable, because you can just drop the drive into another box anytime, as there are no dependencies. Some say that you have to have the /boot partition and the XP partition both on the primary master drive or it won't work. Others say you can use separate drives. Your set-up (the one you say works just fine) - is that with /boot somewhere on the same drive as XP, or with XP on hda and Linux on hdb? Yuri
