Well. It's done. LILO didn't mind living in C:\linux.bin booted from C:\boot.ini and still booted Mandrake 9.2 fine.
I told the installer to write LILO to /dev/hdb1 I then did: dd if=/dev/hdb1 of=linux.bin bs=512 count=1 mcopy linux.bin A: Reboot to windows and: copy a:\linux.bin c:\ attrib -S -R -H c:\boot.ini notepad c:\boot.ini [add c:\linux.bin="Linux" and save & exit notepad] attrib +S +R +H c:\boot.ini Reboot and it all worked. Later, while futzing around, we stuffed something to the point of having to re-install Mandrake (we could've fixed it but being a fresh install there was nothing to lose by re-installing). Only when we re-installed we forgot to change the target for LILO, so it used the default /dev/hda instead of /dev/hdb1. Nothing lost though - Mandrake added Windows to it's boot menu and windows booted okay from LILO. I have warned my bro that a service pack may fux0r LILO on the Primary Master MBR, but at least we know that the C:\BOOT.INI approach still works. Now Christopher Sawtell suggested that perhaps my bro will get into Linux so much he'll only boot XP for the odd app - well his kids (and their Dad) are gamers so maybe XP will be needed for a while! My Sis-in-Law will probably only use email, browser and word processor, so she's the most likely to find Linux useful, but she was the most apprehensive about hosing windows! Roy (my bro) was amazed at how 'familiar' the OOo 1.1 interface is to that other office suite. Only thing the other office suite from redmond is missing is the toolbar button for making pdf files :-) BTW his PC is an Acer bought from DSE, the most linux friendly computer retailer in NZ. Yuri
