That depends entirely on the model of printer, the Deskjet 935C sitting here works 
with manual feed just fine and is not at all tricky to use.

There are a number of places that refil HP cartridges so it can't be that difficult.


The simple fact is that when it comes to printers HP are some of the most 'Linux 
compatible' around, I agree that Inkjets are not cost effective for heavy use but you 
can easily purchase an HP Laser printer from around the $420 mark for a very basic 
printer, up to around $1000 for something a little more hard wearing.
