I'm up and running now , only a temporary solution but at least I can install and update gentoo.
Also my modem is working fine in Mandrake.
I will worry about getting my home network running in Linux later, when I've done heaps more reading .......

Easiest way to get it up and running would be to plug the cable modem straight into the box your building's ethernet card
follow the instructions as per first email , then worry about getting it working with the switch and rest of the pc's on the internal network :)
you dont need the telstra UN/passwd to access the net via the modem
