No - we had this conversation a month or two ago. TelstraClear cable modems are set up to only talk to the first MAC address they see. If you plug them into a switch theres no guarantee they'll talk to your server, rather than another ethernet device on the network [1]
Brian - I'd STRONGLY recommend a firewall, and just as strongly recommend IPCOP which works marvellously with cable. That way you can mess with your linux box, and still have good net connection for the rest of the network.
