Don - Some of us are using Mepis to install a pretty up to date (testing/unstable) 
Debian for desk top use, I for one have found it to be very good, the mirrors all work 
fine and very easy to configure.

It installs very quickly from a live CD, with a 2nd CD of extra app's - based on 
Knoppix, but better than the original in my opinion. 

It might be worth a look since you are familiar with Debian any way.

That may be the claim, but there were 3 people in the #gentoo irc channel 
yesterday, who could not install successfully from the CDs only, and it 
corresponds with my experience only last week.

btw, please don't put message info below the '--' in a message. This is the 
marker which separates the body from the signature. Many if not most mail 
user agents remove the signature part of a message when you make a reply.
