its a 35M download, very similar to the 2.6 series kernel (I just downloaded 2.6.5 ...
Same.
I "upgraded" from RH 9 to Mandrake 10 community. The kernel was broken, and would give a kernel oops while shutdown - due to a NULL pointer of all things - before it got to the stage of unmounting the disk. It turned out to be the hotplug service at fault, but, before I figured that out, I downloaded a new kernel and compiled it. Install didn't work - it couldn't create an initrd. But it was kind enough to screw with /boot so I couldn't boot with the old kernel. Required a bit of Knoppixing to get going again. Now I'm still using 2.6.3, but with no hotplug service. At least it shuts down now, without oopsing on a NULL pointer. Haven't figured out yet how to get 2.6.5 booting...
As a cautionary aside, I accidentally did rm -rf on my backup partition. Before I realised and stopped it, it wiped out all of /etc, and most of the dot files in ~, including all my mail, and settings for emacs and mozilla. Probably some other things I haven't noticed yet too.
Also, I've finally gone back to GNOME after a couple of years with KDE. I think I like GNOME better, although I'm not really sure why.
Cheers, Carl.
