I, personally, do not want to have to plough through dozens of requests to supply messages in order to find a very occasional on topic gem. That would reduce the usefulness of the list to the same level as commercial televison, and I for one would almost certainly stop using it. The other point about getting overtly commercial is simply that there are bound to be some rules about acceptable use written by the University which hosts the list.
