Thats the address of the machine to which you connect.

If everything is set correctly, the connection made by pppd sets up the
numbers in the routing tables and /etc/resolv.conf The kppp program
interfaces to the ppp daemon and does all that stuff automatically.

If you don't want to hassle with the details, by far the easiest way to
connect a network ( of two machines in your case ) is to arrange for one of
the *nix distributions made specifically for this purpose to do it for you.
Distributions which come to mind include:-

http://www.ipcop.org/ Completely GPL
http://www.smoothwall.org/ Dual Licence, 'extra' features are closed.
http://www.gibraltar.at/ LiveCD, based on Debian. licence ditto
http://www.freesco.org/ Boot's off a floppy.

There are others, but I forget the details.
They are no particular order except it's the one in which they came to mind.
I can vouch for IPCop as I have used for a long time using a tatty old 25MHz
'486. That's ample 'pute power for a 'Net gateway, but it might need a bit
more ram. The IPCop needs 32 meg, but freesco runs in much less.

NB. This PC runs Linux. If you find a virus apparently from me,
it has forged the e-mail headers on someone else's machine.
Please do not notify me when this occurs. Thanks.
