Dear Diary,

Friday night.
Wade's huosehold effects were still stored in the garage. Moved him to
his new flat and got home about nine to set up for the Gentoo
Installfest in the garage.
We are squashed into a small place for a while, while we build a new
house so imagine the garage with a sleepout at one end and lined with
shelves and boxes - leaving an area of about 6 metres by 3 metres.
Add to that my computer, our server, a fridge, a coffee machine, 4
tables, a laptop and 2 LTSP machines for browsing, 6 laptops for distcc
compiling and an extra switch.
I went to bed happy knowing that everything was set up for the 6 people
coming to have Gentoo installed tomorrow. (Including 6 sets of printed
instructions)

Saturday Morning.
Nick arrives early as arranged to set up his machine as a mirror and
Binaries host and we waited for the fun to start (happy that our
planning would pay off).
The first 2 to turn up with their machines were not even on our list of
"installees" so we got a bit worried that we might be a little squashed.
So 6 became 8 but we did get everybody in and connected and at the end
of the day most went home with a working Gentoo system complete with
desktop and heaps of packages.
Poor Howard though. First he could not get here early. Secondly he had a
hardware problem. Lastly he had trouble with Grub. Eventually we got him
booting with LILO (and he can still boot into Mandrake and Windows so he
can continue installing packages at his leisure now that the base system
works).
I went to friends and still saw the whole of the Super 12 semi-final.
All in all - Not a bad day.

Follow Ups:
Guys, do not hesitate to ask questions. It was a pretty hectic day but
now that your Gentoo systems are going the real pleasure begins.
Remember to put your make.conf files back to normal for emerging
pleasure.
My mirrors are as per this line (one line):-
GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://203.96.92.95/gentoo
http://linux.citylink.co.nz/gentoo http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo";

When I finish with a compile farm I run:-
/usr/bin/distcc-config --set-hosts "localhost"
There are probably other ways as well but this seems to work for me.

BOFH Excuse #103:

operators on strike due to broken coffee machine

g'day robert & other attendees, arrived home alright & first thing mrs b wants to know is "can i still use the pc??!!", thanks to those late stayers that helped to reconfigure lilo & at least get mandrake & winxp booting.
those cell phone calls were from my wife - our youngest son & his partner have just had their 1st baby (our first grandchild!!) so am about to make a rush trip back to sunny qld for a week to change into a grandfather/grandpa & grow a few grey hairs.
won't have time to look at my gentoo install "options" until i get back sometime after next week.
once again thanks to all the interested onlookers/helpers, i learnt quite a bit (being a relatively new convertee to linux, i'm more used to point/click than cli) & obviously a lot more coming my way. btw thanks chris for pointing out my keyboard mapping problem - always wondered why i had to "double press" the " key!!! :)
cheers
howard
