It IS compressed. This file needs to be moved to your gentoo /boot partition. You can call it what you like, mickeymouse or bambi or late_for_dinner or saddam_hussein [1]. You need to refer to whatever name you chose in menu.lst. kernel-2.6.5-gentoo seemed a sensible enough name. stick to it.
