in fact that sounds more like where the next installfest should be :) i 
always find ideas come mcuh more freely after being lubricated with a 
few handles of the amber stuff & telling the wife "i'm going down to the 
pub for a few beers with the guys" souinds much more plausable than "i'm 
running off with some nerdy guys doing computer stuff with linux (she 
thinks "is this linux male or female"?)

it doesn't matter what kernel you were running when you compiled your
new gentoo kernel. gcc compiles the kernel. if you used suse's gcc you
may have problems - I don't know what version of gcc you have in suse,
but i'm sure you were sensible and compiled your kernel from inside the
gentoo chroot, which uses the stage3 gcc.
that offer of a meeting still holds water, you buy the beer, i'll fix
your kernel
Afterwards i will still have drunk the beer, you /may/ have a working
gentoo..
 

Unguided, I would be recompiling after booting & chrooting from the 
LiveCD instead of from Suse.
