to my tired eyes that very helpful, small and entirely appropriate
screenshot posted by Don only seemed to reveal 77 or 78 columns. Also 
(although its not possible to  tell what it /should/ look like, it
appears that the end of each line is spilling over onto the beginning of
the next one, causing everything to be shunted over a few characters, 

It may therefore just be a case of adjusting putty's terminal parameters.
