*CLUG Installfest2004 meeting #1* held Uni Canterbury Maths/CompSci bldg Rm101 26May04 8pm.
About 15 showed, & David Kirk led off by passing round a draft "media pack" DVD case & cover. This met with general support, and discussion followed the usual range of distro choices to go inside. Mandrake 10 Official will be the default install for newcomers. When other distros are asked for, delivery will depend on their supporters bringing them along on the day. Fedora Core 2 & Suse 9.1 (if available) were the next two recommendations. Gentoo is available on enquiry (Nick Rout). Media packs will cost $10(?).
Partitioning for XP needs certainty, so Robert Fisher undertook to do testing, as he has reported back to list. Mandrake is looking 100%, but Fedora requires tweaking (tho this seems kernal 2.6 related - Chris Sawtell). [As a backup provision, I have checked my Partition Expert license & it only precludes unlicensed use - nothing about machine numbers used on. This works well on XP, & can even tell me that my ReiserFS Gentoo partition has no errors! See also Ross Drummond' s post to CLUG list today re ntfsresize problems.]
A minimum recommended spec was set at P3-450, 128MB RAM, 5-10GBfree hdd.
Chris Sawtell is happy to setup a IPCop firewall boxes (suitable on lower specs) as requested.
We need a small list of specialist installers to handle peripherals like printer, scanner, camera etc.. These should not get too tied down with individual installs, but form an on-call floating skill pool.
The question of commercial vendors was thrashed out at length, in relation to Dick Smith Electronics, IBM, & Xandros interest in the event. Our conclusion was that it was in the interests of Linux's business profile to welcome all comers, & every contribution. So we will have a colourful demo/display section on the day.
Dave Lilley was to enquire after screen printing of Tshirts, & has reported an impending cost for these.
Meeting closed at 9.40pm.
Aplogies for any omissions or inaccuracy recorded above - modify at will!

Just a reminder to anyone who wants to be involved in the installfest.
I wouldn't mind donating a bit of time. Couldn't make it tonight. Ironically i was installing a new kernel on
a friend's SuSE 9.0 machine.
How'd it go Rex? A useable distro for Installfest, you think?
Could someone post a precis of the meeting?
Cheers, Rex\
