That's good, Gentoo is simply not suitable for somebody who is either a total 
newbie to the command line, or has difficulty following complicated written 
instructions precisely. However imho, once it's properly installed, the 
picture changes. Most of the time you can upgrade existing packages or 
install new software with the single emerge command. Sometimes, very 
occasionally, it fails to do things properly.

Gentoo requires a lot of reading before you dive in.
It's absolutely necessary to read and at least understand the outline of the 
96 page install instruction book before you even think of approaching the 
keyboard. iirc, I had two total screw-ups with Gentoo in the 1.2 days before 
I got it installed and going properly.

Don't even nightmare about installing the unstable or '~x86' version. It 
really isn't ready for the General Public. ( as I've just discovered, Scribus 
segfaults. )
