As Gentoofest has seen my first use of a 2.6 kernel, I will persevere with its upgrade path - accessability & functionality is great.

why? it was booting from grub?
After grub passes on to Gentoo, the video frame is shrunken & there's no networking. The hardware modules used after LiveCD's auto-detection are what I most need transferred over to the install partition, to use it comfortably.
