further to this,
am making good headway, having revisited kernel compilation many a time..
ATI video driver ok (except boot frame still small?), onto other items now.
* Have had Gnome up with touchpad working, but want to change to KDE.*
to do it from the precompiled packages, copy them to /usr/portage/packages and do emerge -b =kde-3.2.1
I had, in haste, run "#emerge kde" on the day, with long compiling - a wrong/updated version = the result?
Perhaps this is why "#emerge -b =quanta" make fails on
"grep: /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.2/libstdc++.la: No such file or directory"
& lots more lines "Error 1".. etc "died running emake, kde_src_compile:make"
if you want 3.2.2 just run emerge kde and it will download and compile and install kde - be prepared for a wait! (both on downloading and compiling)
main problem = there is no eth0 up yet :-/
unless using LiveCD & chroot.

Well, those ATI drivers still indicate no support for the RS200 4337 board, & the XFConfig file running Gnome is SuSE's one (off the compiled kernel drivers, I asssume)In either case, when you log in to X just choose kde from the login manager.
no login manager yet - straight to Gnome each time.
