memtest is pretty common now, most distros seem to have it hidden away
in the boot menu.

its pretty easy to install to your hard drive too! you end up with a
similar system, ready rolled debian. i am not sure how they have
configured apt.sources 9or whatever its called) but on a slightly older
version it updated cleanly with the usual apt-get update/upgrade
commands. Thats a very positive change from my experience with updating
a knoppix hd install
