I read a review which stated that it installs to hard disk better than
Knoppix without all of the "extras" which are probably not needed. And
apparently apt-get and synaptic are "ready to go" with Mepis.

Subject: MEPIS Live CD

Hi all,

Until a few days ago I had not heard of MEPIS before. For those who don't
know it is a knoppix style live CD, also based on Debian from what I can
see.

My attention was drawn to it by a post to this list. I downloaded it and
have
just seen it boot. The grub boot options are excellent actually, you can
pick
2.6 or 2.4 kernels with or without acpi as well as pick your screen
resolution! As a little bonus, memtest is a boot option as well.

Nice start. I ran 2.6 up with ACPI on my laptop and it booted faster than
knoppix I think. It boots into KDE and has all the usual helpful little
configurators and Open Office as well.

I don't think it has the same advanced tools that knoppix boasts but it
certainly looks pretty enough and might do a better job of impressing
potential linux converts than knoppix. Especially since Tux Racer 3D is on
it
and that's the first time I've seen and hence giggle over that one.

Quite nice, email me if you want to pick up a copy from me.

Michael.
