The thread started by Derek Smithies got a bit off-topic, but the
essence was a fine idea. I'll start another one to get back on topic.

Derek's suggestion was setting up a "reference" school site with an LTSP
setup of 30 terminals and a server.

I have been wondering for a while about a "Linux [1] Expo" for Chch. I
mean a professional thing with proper displays, papers, experts, an
important overseas visitor as keynote speaker, whatever.

We would REALLY need the pros in chch and wider nz there. They are about.

And serious money and time committment are involved.

or maybe something smaller, a more community based expo, concentrating
on home & school use? in a community group rather than the convention
centre :-/

Part of this desire comes from the pressure we come under at installfest
time to do some demonstrations/showing off, when the day is far too busy
to do that. However I am not looking for something where each of us
brings our home machine and demonstrates that they can play
quake/dvds/compile a kernel in 20 seconds. the thing needs a theme.

perhaps "Linux [1] in Home and Schools"

sorry if this is disjointed, its a bit of a stream of unconsciousness.

I'll go home now and log back in after dinner for the flames....

[1] substitute "open source" perhaps.
